It is true that walking has always been a very popular activity in Donostia-San Sebastián. But it is true as well that people normally use to walk along the typical places of the city. Even being Donostia-San Sebastián quite an easy city to walk, we can say that most of walks done by older people are carried out near La Concha beach, the Urumea riverside and surroundings.

Probably for this success of walking activities, this measure is being the most successful measure carried out by the Municipality of Donostia-San Sebastián inside the AENEAS project.

From our point of view, several objectives are being covered by this measure. On the one hand, it has been achieved that people that were not used to walk have taken this activity as a weekly task for them. Secondly, people have known and visit different places of the city that otherwise they would not never have visited. And finally, sociability has been improved among this group of persons.

Walking with AENEAS in Donostia - San Sebastián

The municipality of Donostia San Sebastián has organised 20 walking workshops, trying to drive older people to these kinds of activities. To organise these excursions, we have tried to design some routes different from the more usual ones. This has been the reason to contact with people of Club Vasco de Camping. Great technical support has been given by them, making the reperages and controlling times and slopes. There is also one instructor who goes with the group in order to keep the group compact and to attend every necessity.

Twenty workshops have been held at the moment with more than 60 people taking part in each activity. People up to 85 years old are participating in the excursions and the atmosphere is really enjoyable. Although there is a stable group of people attending almost all the program, in each excursion new persons join the activity. People from other cities of Gipuzkoa county as Eibar (fifty kilometres from Donostia-San Sebastián) have met some of the excursions, travelling from their hometown by public transport. The programme has been carried out during last months, normally the first and last Friday of each month and will finish next 25th of June.

Lessons learnt

Apart from the objectives previously remarked, it can be seen that, on the one hand, most of the people that take part in this activity have very sustainable transport uses. They use public transport as their habitual way of transport. So, in general, changes in this aspect have not been produced. On the other hand, people who are participating are retired people, most of them over 65. It is being quite difficult to access to the group of people between 50 and 60.

It must be add that attitude towards sustainable activities of this group of people is absolutely positive. It is assumed private car is not the most useful manner to move inside and in the surroundings of the city and walking and public transport are considered as the best way. The opinion about cycling is not the same. It is quite difficult to find people who use bicycle usually. Among men, it is an sport activity normally performed in the week ends.
