Salzburg introduces bus training for seniors
Mobility
is not only a precondition for active participation in life, but above all a
precondition for an independent way of life. The uncertainties and fears that
many older people have about riding public transport can lead to increased
isolation and drastically reduced social participation.
But mobility is
something that need not be lost forever, and this is where the Salzburg training
project for seniors, ‘Mobil sein, dabei sein – sicher mit dem Bus fahren!', comes
into the picture.
The aim of this
project, introduced in 2004, is to overcome stressful situations and regain the
ability to engage in daily routine, while also expanding skills and ability to
enhance mobility and minimise restrictions to movement.
The training course has been specially adjusted to meet the requirements of
older people, and consists of two two-hour units over two consecutive days. In
addition to the training, participants also receive a safety brochure covering a
broad range of safety concerns while riding public transport.
The training programme began in
2004, and five or six sessions are offered each year. The number of participants
is typically between six and ten. Special training on request is also available
for self-help groups and
older people with disabilities (e.g. Parkinson's disease).
The training course is successful due to the equally shared cooperative efforts
of ZGB Zentrum für Generationen und Barrierefreiheit and StadtBus Salzburg. This
teamed effort ensures full competence regarding public transport know-how and
instructing
older people.
